What is the Open Transit Initiative?

A movement to break the cycle of vendor lock-in, closed ecosystems, and inconsistent data.

A new way of thinking about transit that enables agencies and operators to freely integrate with the tools and data they need to provide reliable service, and a safer rider experience in a rapidly changing environment.

Our Core Principles

Open Ecosystem

Open APIs are critical to ensure interoperability between different vendor solutions. This enables transit agencies to select the best technologies and tools for their operation, which ultimately benefits the riders and communities they serve.

Data Standards

Data standards enable agencies and technology partners to share data. The Open Transit Initiative (OTI) focuses on leveraging and building upon current data standards, like GTFS and GTFS-rt, to ensure that systems can easily communicate with one another.

Future Proof

Technology that leverages data standards and communicates with other systems through open APIs can adapt to shifting customer needs. The OTI works to empower agencies with solutions that are constantly updating and can work with a variety of hardware and software vendors.

“To nourish freedom of movement and sustainable communities, we need a transit ecosystem that’s innovative, agile and collaborative. Optibus is thrilled to join the Open Transit Initiative and work together to fulfill that vision.”

Amos Haggiag, CEO, Optibus

"Remix is excited to join the Open Transit Initiative and to enable transit agencies to leverage the data and technologies they already have and will have in the future. Remix’s transit planning platform would not exist if it were not for open data and data standards such as GTFS, GTFS-Ride...

"WaySine designs and manufactures solar powered real-time information signs for bus stops and shelters, with a key focus on ease of use and ease of deployment. Paramount to that is the flexibility and interoperability of using open-API structures and standardized GTFS-RT protocols...

"Masabi is helping transit agencies and operators move away from bespoke AFC systems to a Fare Payments-as-a-Service delivery model, providing the latest innovations and a future-proof roadmap.” said Brian Zanghi, CEO at Masabi. “We are thrilled to be joining like minded organizations in the transit...

"Trackit LLC is committed to working with like minded cloud-based companies to provided integrations (API) to share data and create compelling solutions for your mutual customers. Trackit believes, when we give a transit agency the ability to select from different vendors to provide a seamless solution...

"IBI Group believes in the use of open data standards like GTFS/GTFS-realtime and GBFS, and moreover have built our TRANSIT data suite of software systems on them. We see the evolution and use of these standards as integral to our company and our industry."

Ritesh Warade, Director, IBI Group

“Open APIs are, plain and simple, the future of mobility. At Transit, it's how we put power in riders' hands, integrating real-time directions, payments, and last-mile options into the best app experience possible. Transit agencies are pushing forward with these data standards, working with the private....

"Spare’s open API is one reason why we are considered an innovator inon-demand transit, along with the interoperability of our systems and our data-drivenness. By joining the Open Transit Initiative, we will help push the boundaries of modern public transportation. And together with our...

"Joining the Open Transit Initiative allows us to be part of a collective that helps to remove vendor-imposed boundaries thereby improving data exchange and interchange making solutions more functional and interoperable."

"Radiola Land is built around open data. It’s all about giving choice and flexibility to agencies. We let the quality of our product and service do the talking – no agency should feel locked in by their vendor. If you do, maybe it’s time to decouple, and make the move to an open data system."

“Transit agencies have been trapped for too long within walled gardens of technology, held captive by vendors who rely on barriers to competition instead of big ideas and innovation.  We embrace an open architecture model that relies on data standards and APIs instead of custom configurations...
